Feeding (Wiliston Basin), 2013

02:00 Excerpt of 06:30 min HD Video

I followed a childhood friend as she does her chores in North Dakota.  The long take is used to emphasize the body’s relationship to space and time and to blur the lines between choreography and the mundane, documentary and fiction.  Effects interrupt the immersive perspective by drawing attention to the technology used and the framing of the image.  Green screen technology enables us to insert actions and movements from one context to another virtually rendering place obsolete. Currently in North Dakota the oil industry is disrupting an area that has been relatively unchanged for decades.  Generations of North Dakotans are being removed from their land and way of life. A cloth of chroma key green has covered the region causing residents to continue moving within a collapsing context.
