Fence #1, 2015

Created while in residence at the Wassaic Project, Trail for Trespass was a site specific land intervention in response to the heavy use of no trespassing signs found within a breathtaking landscape. As an artist interested in the tension between the virtual and the veridical, I considered the signs a virtual fence solely reinforced by the social construction of private land ownership. In the objective physical realm there is nothing stopping anyone from interacting with the land. I cleared a path to invite trespass over the course of a few days. However, my trail was stopped abruptly when my shovel was moved to the trailhead accompanied by a "no trespassing" sign.
